Juan Jimenez is the owner of a small, half hectare plot of land at 1700masl in the village of El Mirador in Las Pirias, close to the city of Jaen. Juan has been a coffee farmer all of his life, but most of the land he owns is at low altitude and the cup quality doesn’t reach specialty grade. However, in 2019 Juan inherited a small plot of land at 1700masl which he decided to plant with marsellesa variety, a highly productive variety from Central America, since he had good experiences of this variety in lower altitudes. Juan participated in a local “best of Las Pirias” competition in 2024 and obtained second place with a score of 88 points, which was this very lot.
