Peru El Calanal

Orlando Julon is the owner of the 1ha farm el Cañalal which is situated in the village of La Virginia in Jaen. El Cañalal is named after the sugar cane plant, since the farm was previously a small sugar cane farm. Prior to 2018 coffee wasn’t widely grown in La Virginia since it’s altitude and climate didn’t allow for the coffee plant to grow, since the village is surrounded by forest and altitudes range from 1900 to 2300 metres, the climate was too cool for coffee to develop. Since the climate has changed in the last decade or so people have started to plant coffee with some success. Orlando decided to plant catuai variety for it’s high productivity and quality, and the plants have adapted will to the area, so much so that Orlando wants to plant more land with the same variety.

Orlando fermented this lot for 7 days or 168 hours, long fermentation times like this can be done with more control in higher altitude areas since the cool climate controls the rate of fermentation somewhat. The coffee was dried on raised beds for 10 days.
