Verano coffee comes from farms situated in the municipalities of southern Huila.
The Huila department is widely recognized both in Colombia and internationally as the country’s largest coffee producer by volume, while also being known for cultivating a significant amount of specialty-grade coffee, typically grown on small farms averaging 3-4 hectares.
Verano means „summer” in Spanish, but in Colombia, it refers to the dry season, which in southern Huila typically spans from October to March.
The verano of 2024 was particularly dry and hot, which slowed the growth of young coffee cherries. This intense dry season led to smaller cherries on many farms, resulting in beans under the exportable screen size of 14 increasing by 5– 15%, depending on the farm’s altitude and location.
